VALERIE

  • High-yield potential – on average 3% over Cassia over 4 years of trials (2018-2021)
  • Good straw strength and resistance to crackling
  • Slow developing in autumn – suitable for early sowing
  • Early maturing – helps to spread workload and risk
  • Excellent grain quality – very high KPH and TGW, lowest screenings of all varieties listed

KWS TARDIS

KWS TARDIS is an exciting new variety that brings 2-row barley yields to a new level and which is close to or as good as the best of the 6-row alternatives on offer. It offers an excellent combination of very high yield potential, strong agronomics characteristics, and good grain quality.

VERY HIGH YIELD POTENTIAL

KWS TARDIS is now recommended by DAFM following successful completion of 3 years of official VCU trials. On average, TARDIS is yielding a massive 5% over the nearest competitor 2-row variety and is also right up there with 6-row types too, conventional or hybrid. For example, this 5% yield advantage will deliver an extra 2.5 tonnes more barley per tonne of seed sown than LG CASTING, which at a time when grain prices are at a record level, makes such an increase in grain output very worthwhile.
  • Good Resistance to Lodging, Brackling and Neck-Break pre-harvest
  • Good resistance to wet weather diseases like Net Blotch and Rhynchosporium
  • Very Good grain quality – high KPH and TGW with low screenings
  • Good Vigour in Autumn & Spring

KWS PATRIOT

KWS PATRIOT is a high-yielding 2-row variety that featured in Irish trials for three years from 2018 to 2020 – see results below. During that time, it showed itself to be extremely consistent across 3 very different growing seasons, delivering an average performance that was almost on par with another new 2-row variety at the time, LG Casting.
  • Consistent & high-yielding variety that performs across all soil types
  • Taller than most other 2-rows but with good standing power and resistance to crackling
  • Good resistance to wet weather diseases, especially Net Blotch and Rhynchosporium
  • Exhibits very good autumn and spring vigour, tillers well and copes well in difficult growing conditions
  • Slightly earlier maturing than other 2-rows, good grain quality with high KPH & large TGW

KWS INFINITY

  • Consistent high-yielding variety that performs across all soil types
  • Good grain quality with high KPH & large TGW
  • Good straw strength and resistance to brackling
  • Good resistance to wet weather diseases, especially Net Blotch and Rhynchosporium
  • Exhibits good vigour and ability to compensate in difficult growing conditions
  • Slightly later maturing, helps to spread harvest worload on farms with a lot of winter barley

KWS CASSIA

  • Ireland’s most widely-grown 2-row variety now for over 10 years
  • Extremely consistent performer and still remains very popular with growers
  • Exceptional specific weight and overall grain quality
  • Very good straw strength and resistance to brackling, easy to harvest
  • Good resistance to Net Blotch, Rust & Ramularia, but will need fungicide treatment for Mildew and Rhynchosporium
  • Approved for many years now by Diageo for use as roasting barley variety (Guinness)
