AD Long-Term offers great potential for biogas production when well managed Aber HSG swards are the cheapest source of nutrition for producing meat and milk.

Studies that have been carried out at Germinal Horizon Aberystwyth show that Aber HSG ryegrasses perform better versus general grassland mixtures.

All Aber High Sugar Grass (HSG) varieties outperformed mixed grassland with the conclusion that higher water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content in grass has a positive effect on the yield and rate at which biogas is produced.

We are setting up further research at Germinal Horizon Aberystwyth to compare Aber HSG varieties with alternative feedstocks that have a range of D-values and at varying harvest dates.

Aber HSG varieties are bred for higher WSC content and rank highly for D-value, offering the ideal combination of characteristics for an AD feedstock if ensiled.

  • Consider maintaining nesting habitats for bumblebees and solitary bees, keeping them free from pesticides
  • Wild bees need an uninterrupted source of wildflowers for food. Additional flowers are particularly important in summer after hedgerows have finished flowering
